Abstract:

In this study, it is aimed at examining the homelessness processes of homeless people, the difficulties they experience and their needs in Street. Qualitative research method was used to interview the homeless. Semi-structured interview form was developed for the interview and face-to-face interviews were carried out with 20 male homeless people who live in the district of Beyoglu, Istanbul. The data obtained were evaluated on the basis of two main themes; the factors causing homelessness and the difficulties faced by the homeless. As a result of this research, poor family relations, financial difficulties, alcohol or drug use, mental health problems and having been in prison etc. stand out as the causes of homelessness. In addition, it has been found that homeless street people have gone through problems in safety, sheltering, food and clothing supply, hygiene and self-care when they live on the street. It has been understood that available services to meet the basic needs of homeless individuals just help them survive. Accordingly, a permanent solution to the problem of homelesness couldn't be implemented yet. In this context, it is required to develop comprehensive social policies and activities to socially and multidimensionally integrate the homeless to society.
