Aydınlanma düşüncesi, Avrupa’nın modernleşme serüveninde bir kırılmayı ifade eder. Ortaçağ’ın son dönemlerine dek götürülen, Rönesans’ın izinde toplumsal dinamiklerin dönüşümü hususunda kayda değer gelişmelere ev sahipliği yapan Avrupa modernleşmesinin seyri, XVIII. yüzyıla gelindiğinde değişmeye başlar. Aydınlanmanın ayır edici vasfı, XIX.yüzyılda Avrupa’da yaşanan muazzam dönüşümün düşünsel temellerini atmış olmasında zuhur eder. Rönesans’ın açtığı yolda önemli bir ivme kazanan modernleşme olgusu, Aydınlanma ile birlikte köktenci bir hüviyete bürünmüştür. Bu anlamıyla aydınlanma, Avrupa’nın modernleşme serüveninde bir dönüm noktası olma özelliğine haizdir. Aydınlanma’nın birey anlatısı, özgür iradeye yaptığı vurgu ve akla yüklediği misyon, onun moderniteye dönük yüzünü oluşturur ki söz konusu kırılma da bu noktada tezahüre etmektedir. İsaiah Berlin’in özgün çalışmalarıyla literatüre kazandırdığı ve aydınlanmaya dair farklı bir eleştirel perspektif ortaya koyan “karşı aydınlanma” kavramı önemlidir. Bu söylem ve argümanlardan hareketle Berlin’in aydınlanmaya yöneltilen modern eksenli kimi eleştirileri öncelemesi bakımından büyük bir önem teşkil etmektedir. Karşı aydınlanma kapsamındaki fikirlerin çeşitli ideoloji ve disiplinlerle ilişkilendirilmesinin mümkün oluşu, kavrama dair farklı yaklaşım ve çalışmaların önünü açmaktadır. Karşı devrim olgusu, pratiği önceleyen bir nitelik taşımakta ve bu nedenle kavramsal çerçevesinin oluşturulması önemlidir. Bu cihette genelleyici hükümlerde bulunmak için, tarihte cereyan eden ya da teşebbüs düzeyinde kalan devrimleri incelemek gerekmektedir. Fransız Devrimi, bu noktada tarihidir.
The idea of enlightenment represents a breakthrough in Europe’s modernization. The journey of modernization of Europe, which was taken to the last periods of the Middle Ages, which was the home of remarkable developments in the transformation of social dynamics in the footsteps of the Renaissance, XVIII. It begins to change when it comes to the century. The distinctive foundation of the lighting is the foundation of the massive transformation in Europe in the 19th century. The phenomenon of modernization, which has gained a significant momentum on the way the Renaissance opened, has been filled with a root benefit with the Enlightenment. In this sense, illumination is characterized by the characteristic of being a turning point in Europe’s modernization. The individual narrative of the Enlightenment, the emphasis on the free will and the mission of the mind, forms its face to modernity, and this breakdown manifests itself at this point. It is important that the concept of "contra-illumination" which is given to literature by Isaiah Berlin's original work and shows a different critical perspective on illumination. These speeches and arguments make Berlin’s modern axis to illuminate a great importance in terms of priority of criticism. The possibility of associating ideas within the scope of counter-illumination with various ideologies and disciplines opens different approaches and studies to conception. The counter-revolution phenomenon is carrying a quality that predicts practice and therefore it is important to create a conceptual framework. In order to make general provisions in this struggle, it is necessary to examine the revolutions that have occurred in history or remained at the level of effort. The French Revolution is history at this point.
