Abstract:

The concept of the Hereafter is one of the most mentioned subjects in the Qur’an. Belief in the Hereafter, which is one of the principles of faith, is mentioned in the Qur’an many times along with the belief in Allah. It is also mentioned in the Qur’an that people will find their reward or punishment in the Hereafter without any injustice. It is stated that those who lead a life in accordance with Allah’s will is going to receive the reward of paradise and those who adopt the opposite way of life is going to suffer the punishment of hell. In this way, Almighty Allah speaks of the blessings of heaven as well as the punishment of hell. In this sense, the warning that one should pay attention to his/her acts always appears in the Qur’an as a manifestation of Allah’s mercy, the Most Merciful. Among these warnings, “the scenes of regret” in the Hereafter occupy a significant place in the Qur’an. Such scenes are sometimes presented with a preposition that expresses the meaning of “I wish” and sometimes with the presence of a word that expresses a direct regret. These statements, presented with different words, often contain an impossible wish. In the unique verses of the Qur’an, these scenes that appeal to people contain many wisdom that must be considered. In particular, the determination of the reasons behind the regret of those people in these scenes is important in order to comprehend the value of the messages of the Qur’an, which calls itself guidance. In this study, such scenes will be depicted and the Qur’an’s warnings will be revealed by identifying behaviors that lead people to regret in the Hereafter.
