Abstract This article deals with two researches linked to the Nucleus for Studies and Research of Education in Young Childhood (Nupein) of the Federal University of Santa Catarina, which, at the doctoral level, aimed to investigate the emergence of teaching and teacher education in kindergartens and day care centers in Santa Catarina, from 1900 to 1960. In both, the documentary investigation counted on a varied collection of sources, such as chronicles, newspapers, minutes, annals, magazines, reports, certificates, decrees, terms of inspection of visits, photographs, oral sources. The work showed that the emergence of teaching in crèches and kindergartens and the training of teachers in the latter, as well as the creation of such institutions, took place under the prominence of Catholic and Lutheran confessional education. The initiative of confessional institutions in this segment of early childhood education overlapped the role of the state of Santa Catarina, which did not go beyond the letter of the law.
