The knee is one of the most commonly involved area in osteoarthritis, the leading cause of morbidity especially in the elderly and medial compartment is more often affected. Hemiarthroplasty (unicondylar= unicompartmental=partial) replacement surgery of the knee joint was first described in the early 1950s. Towards the end of 1970's, quite different from each other and often unsuccesfull results have reduced interest in partial knee replacement(UKA). The developments in implant design, surgical techniques and instrumentation increased interest in UKA again. Folloing an appropriate patient selection and surgical technique quite good results of UKA have been published in the literature. UKA can be considered as the first replacement surgery for young active patients with single compartment osteoarthritis; and as the final prosthesis surgery for elderly patients.
