Abstract:

In the Republic of Turkey, especially in the II. After the World War II, the Turkish Armed Forces intervened and redesigned the country’s administration in times of crisis, when the system and politics were thought to be blocked. It did this by making military coups as it was on May 27, 1960, March 12, 1971, and September 12, 1980. However, a permanent order could not be achieved and the problems continued in the same way, even deeper. The military coup of September 12, 1980, which constitutes the main subject of our study, is a turning point. After the coup, political life, economic system, social and even cultural structure were changed. There are many reasons that prepared the military coup that caused such a fracture. Here, the Presidential election process, which is one of the reasons, is emphasized. Election is actually a tool that triggers the coup rather than causing it. The President of the State of the Republic of Turkey could not be elected for 6 months, and the election process was locked. This article has been prepared by examining the minutes of the 19th Meeting of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) (19.12.1979- 11.09.1980), the memories of the names on the agenda, the works written on this subject, and following the press of the period. In the process leading up to the September 12 Military Coup, the Presidential elections were examined.
