Abstract:

In Brazil, research carried out in the last decades has demonstrated an increase in overweight in the juvenile group. This profile requires the adoption of health promotion initiatives in the school environment through multifocal and intersectoral actions. In this direction, the objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of an intervention program on the overweight of schoolchildren of a public educational institution in the State of Minas Gerais. 44 children of school age were selected. Overweight children were selected based on the BMI parameter proposed by the Brazilian Ministry of Health. The intervention was carried out at the school during the eight-week period and involved: food and nutrition education (EAN) workshops. The results show that the intervention was successful with increasing consumption of more nutritious foods such as fruits. And still, the decrease of some ultra processed, such as: artificial juices, soft drinks and industrialized cakes. It was concluded that the intervention was effective in controlling the overweight of schoolchildren through the change in food consumption. In this way, the implementation of actions of this nature should be encouraged at the local level.
