Introduction: Overweight and obesity in childhood and adolescence has been increasing substantially throughout the world. Objective: To verify the relationship between BMI, waist circumference and physical performance in schoolchildren. The sample consisted of 2,049 schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 from the North of Minas Gerais. Methods: The sample consisted of 2,049 schoolchildren aged 11 to 14 from the North of Minas Gerais. Body mass, height, waist circumference and BMI, as well as horizontais impulsem and abdominal in one minute tests were evaluated. To verify the behavior of the variables according to age, ANOVA one way was performed. To analyze the influence of BMI on waist circumference and physical performance, a multivariate analysis was performed, and Pearson's correlation coefficient (r) was used to verify the associations of BMI with the variables, using a level of significance of 95%. Results: The prevalence of overweight and obesity was 17.5% and 3.5%, respectively. BMI was significantly correlated and directly proportional with abdominal circumference (r=0.605 p=0.000) and horizontal impulse (r=0.021 p=0.000) and inversely proportional to abdominal test (r=-0.024 p=0.000). Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight and obesity is a worrying issue regarding public health care, and that BMI may be a mediating factor in the growth process of children and adolescents, in addition to being significantly associated with anthropometric measures , such as abdominal circumference, and to suggest influences on physical performance levels in adolescents.
