Günümüzde ekonomik kalkınma sadece nicel olarak değil nitel olarak da tanımlanan bir kavramdır. Bu anlamda nitel bir kavram olan mutluluk da ekonomik kalkınmayla ilişkilendirilen önemli bir konu olmaya başlamıştır. Kalkınmanın bir göstergesi olan mutluluğun Dünya Mutluluk Endeksi, Gayri Safi Milli Mutluluk, Küresel Mutluluk Endeksi, Mutlu Gezegen Endeksi ve Daha İyi Yaşam Endeksi gibi ölçüm yöntemleri vardır ve mutluluğun demokrasi ile olan ilişkisi literatürde araştırılan bir konu olmuştur. Bu kapsamda çalışmanın amacı, demokrasinin mutluluk düzeyine etkisini BRIC (Brezilya, Rusya, Hindistan, Çin) ve yeni yükselen ekonomiler olarak bilinen MIST (Meksika, Endonezya, Güney Kore, Türkiye) ülkelerinin tamamı olarak 8 ülke için 2013-2018 dönemine ait veriler ile panel sıralı nitel tercih yöntemini kullanarak araştırmaktır. Araştırma sonucuna göre demokrasinin mutluluğun yüksek düzeylerinde daha etkili ve yüksek mutluluk düzeyini etkileme olasılığının daha yüksek olduğu sonucu elde edilmiştir.
Today, economic development is a concept not only defined as quantum, but also as quality. In this sense, happiness, which is a qualitative concept, has also begun to become an important topic linked to economic development. There are methods of measurement of happiness, which are an indicator of development, such as World Happiness Index, Extremely Clean National Happiness, Global Happiness Index, Happy Planet Index, and Better Life Index, and the relationship of happiness with democracy has been a topic studied in literature. The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of democracy on the level of happiness by using the panel ranked quality preference method with data for the period 2013-2018 for 8 countries as BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India, China) and the newly emerging economies known as MIST (Mexico, Indonesia, South Korea, Turkey). The study found that democracy is more effective at higher levels of happiness and more likely to affect higher levels of happiness.
