Introduction: Overweight and obesity pose a threat to adolescent health they experience a period of great vulnerability and changes in the transition to adulthood. Physical inactivity, low self-esteem, snacks unbalanced excess and great susceptibility to consumer advertising are promoters for excess peso.Objetivo to assess the prevalence of overweight and obesity among adolescents in a private school in Santa Inês-MA. Methodology: Cross-sectional study consisting of 134 adolescents aged 10 to 19 years, a private school in Santa Inês-MA in which we evaluated the nutritional status based body mass index by age, socioeconomic data and daily habits in terms of time spent watching television, video game or computer and practiced physical activity in addition to questions about the amount of meals per day. Results: We found 28.3% of adolescents at risk for overweight, 10.4% of this group were obese, 51.4% of adolescents were normal and 9.7% underweight. For the hours in front of the TV/ video game / computer, physical activity, socioeconomic classes, number of meals per day with obesity and overweight, there was significant evidence. Conclusion: In this light, overweight and obesity is increasing and worrying that nutritional status of adolescents who participated in this study provides one more element to point to the importance of nutritional education activities in schools for the prevention of overweight and other health problems related.
