Abstract:

There are many quantitative and qualitative orientations used for inferences about the ease or difficulty of texts. Readability is one of them. The concept of readability, which means reaching a judgment about the difficulty or ease of readability of a text by taking into account the quantitative characteristics of texts such as syllable, word and sentence length, is an important numerical data in terms of detecting text-related problems in second language teaching. It is important to determine the appropriateness of the texts by applying such data to the texts in the teaching materials used in teaching Turkish as a foreign language, in terms of improving the teaching process. Accordingly, in this research, it is aimed to examine the Academic Turkish for International Students: Social Sciences textbook in terms of readability. In the research in which the descriptive research technique was used, the data were obtained from the Academic Turkish for International Students: Social Sciences textbook. In line with the relevant purpose, the syllable, word and sentence lengths of the texts were determined by the researcher; Ateşman and Çetinkaya-Uzun readability formulas were applied to the obtained data. The resulting scores were matched with the levels corresponding to the formulas and evaluated in terms of ease/difficulty. As a result of the research, it was determined that the related book consisted of medium difficulty, difficult and very difficult texts according to the Ateşman formula in terms of readability; According to the Çetinkaya-Uzun formula, it was determined that it consisted of texts at educational and disability levels. When the book is used in the teaching process of international students learning Turkish academically and the readability studies carried out on the C1 level texts, it has been determined that the texts are suitable for the target level.
