Introduction: climacteric is a biological milestone in the life of women, and as frequent complaints are the difficulty of concentration, emotional instability, depressive mood and weight gain. Objective: to examine the relationship between obesity and climacteric symptoms (anxiety, depressed mood and irritability) in women treated at a clinic in southern Brazil. Methods: cross-sectional observational study of women who came after the service of Climacteric and Gynecological Surgery Ambulatory of the University of Caxias do Sul, through a larger study entitled "Metabolic syndrome and menopausal status in women attending a menopause clinic of southern Brazil ". Results: a 46.3% prevalence of obesity was found. Among the variables studied, the ones which had significance in relation to overweight were smoking, number of pregnancies, menopausal status, irritability and anxiety. Conclusions: the lifestyle is associated with the psychological state of women in the climacteric period, where overweight is also related to feelings of irritability and anxiety.
