Abstract:

Objective: To verify dietary intake and physical exercise by individuals with diabetes mellitus. Methods: This is an integrative review study where we searched for studies published between 2014 and 2019, where the Lilacs, Pubmed and Scielo databases were used. Results: According to the analysis of the studies, it was observed that a diet rich in foods with low glycemic index and soluble fibers, allows additional improvements in glycemic control, metabolic syndrome, lipid profile, Chronic Renal Disease, insulin sensitivity and micro inflammation, significantly improves constipation and diarrhea in diabetic individuals. Among the benefits of physical exercise are increased insulin action, increased glucose uptake by muscles, reduced glycemia and increased cellular sensitivity to insulin, and decreased body fat, among others. Conclusion: The present study showed that it is of primary importance to educate individuals with Diabetes Mellitus about lifestyle changes in the impact of their illness, such as adherence to healthy eating habits and physical activity.
