Abstract Starting from Wolfgang Iser's conjectures, which enable to affirm that one culture's imaginary manifest itself through its fictional production, this article aims to discuss the evolution of contemporary imaginary on the creation of artificial life, from XIX century until present day, analyzing science fiction stories. In this sense, the text analyses the evolution of automaton's concept in science fiction literature and cinema as a reconfiguration of the scientific discoveries and the production of each times' imaginary.
