Abstract:

Abstract:

Purpose: In this study, besides nutritional and reproductive activities and their direct damage, the presence in the production areas of plants belonging to the Solanaceae family in Hatay province of Cicadellidae and Cixiidae (Hemiptera) species with potential risk of transporting viruses and viruses-like organisms. Method and findings: Survey studies for the determination of the species associated with the Cicadellidae family between May-October 2011 and May-October 2012 were carried out in the areas of the production of pepper, tomatoes, potatoes and potatoes in the districts of Antakya, Reyhanlı, Kırıkhan, Hassa, Altınözü, Aleksenderun, Yayladağı and Samandağ, where the vegetables associated with the Solanacea family were produced intensely. In the survey studies, the vacuum insect gathering tool (D-VAC) was sampled by drawing samplings 6 times for 60 seconds from the rows within the field, so that the plants on different rows will represent the field. In this study, 2 species belonging to the Agallinae subfamily in the Cicadellidae family, 11 species belonging to the Deltocephalinae subfamily and 12 species belonging to the Typhlocybinae subfamily, 5 species belonging to the Typhlocybinae subfamily and 4 species belonging to the total of 3 subfamily, 18 species belonging to the Cicadellidae. The study also identified the type of Hyalesthes obsoletus associated with the family of Cixiidae The importance and impact of the study: The horizon and the area in our country is an important province where plants belong to the family of Solanaceae are grown and contributes significantly to the country’s economy. Some types of Cicadellidae identified in the survey studies, Hyalesthes obsoletus, the Cixiidae species, and Laodelphax striatellus virus and viral-like organisms, the Delphacidae species, are advised to take attention to these species and to conduct research on this.

Abstract:

Aim: Presence of Cicadellidae and Cixiidae (Hemiptera) species, which cause direct damage by feeding and also are potential vectors of virus and virus like organisms, was investigated on Solanaceae crop plants in Hatay province, Turkey Methods and Results: Surveys were conducted in Antkaya, Reyhanlı, Hassa, Altınözü, İskenderun, Yayladağı and Samadağ districts of Hatay province where vegetable crops of Solanaceae family such as pepper, tomato, potato and eggplant are intensively cultivated in May-October 2011 and May-October 2012. Samplings were conducted as 6 times of 60 seconds sweeping by a vacuum insect sampling device (D-VAC) between rows of the crops representing the field. Conclusion: A total of 18 species were identified belonging to 18 genera of three subfamilies namely Agallinae (2 genera, 2 species), Deltocephalinae (11 genera, 12 species) and Typhlocybinae (5 genera, 4 species) of Cicadellidae family. Furthermore, Hyalesthes obsoletus belongs to Cixiidae family were also identified. Significance and Impact of the Study: Hatay province is one of the important producers of Solanaceae crop plants of Turkey through which it is also contributing to the country’s economy. It is suggested that Hyalesthes obsoletus (Cixiidae), Laodelphax striatellus (Delphacidae) and some Cicadellidae species determined in this study are needed to be further investigated as they are potential vectors of virus and virus like organisms.
