Abstract:

The book titled “The Entry of Ethnography into Turkey and İlm-İ Ahval-İ Akvam, Andreas David Mordtmann, Osman Bey”, written by Yeliz Okay, is an important source for the history of Ottoman anthropology. In this article, the points of the book will be given in general and some basic elements of the book will be evaluated. The ideas in the book are discussed according to the titles in which they take place. In order to make this book and its subjects more understandable, the travel books of the period, the ones written about Şemsettin Sami and Satı Bey are included in this study. Yeliz Okay's book, Ethnography's Introduction to Turkey and İlm-i Ahvâl-i Akvâm: Andreas David Mordtmann and Osman Bey, started with the birth and perception of ethnology/ethnography/anthropology thought in the West and continued with its reflections in the East. has done.
