Abstract:

Today, postmodernism is one of the primary topics of interest to both writers and researchers in the field of contemporary Turkish literature. It is seen that the prevalence and popularity of postmodern techniques and practices make it difficult to bring different perspectives to the Works labeled as “postmodern”. In other words, although this approach is contemporary and up to date, it also brings some limitations. One of the authors that should be considered in the context of the situation in question is Ismail Guzelsoy. Güzelsoy frequently and effectively uses postmodern narration techniques such as intertextuality, metafiction, and plural narrator in his own books. However, in the works of Güzelsoy, meaning patterns are not only formed by these techniques. In this article, the word “pearl” used as a leitmotif in Güzelsoy’s novel Değmez is examined. It has been seen that this word plays a dominant role in the understanding of narrative people and places as a leitmotif and creates new layers of meaning. In addition, it has been seen that the word pearl has become a symbol of the concept of “value” beyond the narrative, and it both covers and exceeds the narrative through this concept.
