Abstract:

Today, the accreditation studies on nursing education programs have accelerated, and there is a need for more information about program evaluation models. Program evaluation is the systematic documenting of the results or effects of the programs to arrive at a conclusion and to value the program. The Kirkpatrick Education Evaluation Model was chosen because it is suitable for use in the evaluation of higher education, adult education and in-service training programs. The model consists of four successive stages: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. In the reaction stage, the purpose is to determine the students’ reactions to the program, and the emphasis is on the importance of their positive reactions in the effectiveness of the education. In the learning phase, the purpose is to determine to what extent the changes in knowledge, attitude, skills and behavior occur in students at the end of the education program. At the behavior stage, the purpose is to determine the degree of changes in the students’ behaviors with their participation in the education program. In the results phase, the final results that emerge as a consequence of the students’ completing the education program are examined. It is thought that this model can be used more especially in evaluating the effects of the results of education on practice in nursing education, patient/health education and in-service training. The purpose of the review is to introduce the Kirkpatrick Educational Evaluation Model and to put forward suggestions for its use in the evaluation of nursing education programs.
