“Fransa’daki Devrim Üzerine Düşünceler”, 1790’da Edmund Burke tarafından kaleme alınan ve siyasal düşünceler tarihinde Anglosakson tarzı liberal muhafazakârlığın kurucu metni olarak kabul edilen eserin adıdır. Osmanlı siyasal yazınında benzer isimde bir çalışma bulunmamakla beraber, ideolojik konumlanış bakımından bu çizgiye yakın düşen bir metne rastlamak mümkündür. Bu metin, Osmanlı İmparatorluğu’nun Tanzimat Dönemi’ndeki resmi tarihi niteliği taşıyan Tarih-i Cevdet’in ciltleri arasında dağınık parçalar hâlinde yer alan Fransız Devrimi anlatısı ve eleştirisidir. Metnin yazarı olan Ahmed Cevdet Paşa, eserinin çok sık alıntılanmış kimi istisnai parçalarında Fransız devrimcilerinden horlayıcı ifadelerle bahsetmesi ve kariyerinin izleyen döneminde Kanun-ı Esasi’nin ilânına karşı çıkması nedeniyle kimi zaman reaksiyoner bir düşünür olarak değerlendirilmiştir. Ne var ki Tarih-i Cevdet’in Fransız Devrimi’ne ilişkin pasajlarının bütüncül bir okuması, Cevdet Paşa’nın, “ancien régime”i koşulsuz biçimde savunan bir tutuculuğa değil, anayasal düzenin kademeli bir evrimle kurulmasını tercih eden bir tür liberal muhafazakârlığa yakın durduğunu ortaya koymaktadır.
"Reflections on the Revolution in France" is the title of the work written by Edmund Burke in 1790, which is known as the constituent text of Anglo-Saxon liberal-conservationism. Although the Ottoman political literature does not have an essay that has a similar title, it is possible to find a text that is close to this ideological position. This text is the narrative and critical of the French Revolution that is sprinkled among the volumes of History-i Cevdet, the official history of the Tanzimat era, the bureaucratic modernizing period of the Ottoman Empire. Ahmed Cevdet Pasha (1822-1895), the author of the text, had mistakenly been regarded as a reactionary thinker, because of his most quoted insulting comments on French revolutionaries and his opposition to the declaration of the Ottoman Constitution (the Ottoman Constitution) in the late stages of his career. However, a holistic reading of Cevdet's passages on French Revolution reveals that Cevdet Pasha is not attached to a reactionary position that defends the "an old regime" unconditionally, but rather he is close to a liberal-conservative ideology that approves the establishment of a constitutional order in a gradual evolution.
