Abstract:

Abstract This article analyzes the act of translating from the perspective of “rational empathy”. Such empathy, as explained by concepts such as “personification” and “Model Reader” (Umberto Eco), must be established on the part of the translator in relation to the text, the author, the reader and even the editor. Although the researcher examines, above all, the passage from English to French (especially Canadian), her observations are also valid to reflect on the translation from English to Portuguese, as well as on issues common to all languages, such as contrast between literary and pragmatic translation or the role of general culture and the linguistic code in the practice of translation.
