Bu makalede Avrupa Birli ği'nin derinleşmesinden ziyade, geni şlemesi konusu çahşılmıştı r. Tarihi perspektiften bakı ldığı nda, eski bir üye olan Yunanistan, yeni üye Polonya ve müzakere sürecindeki Türkiye'nin, AB 'nin siyasi kriterlerini yerine getirme performansı analiz edilerek karşılaştı rı lmıştı r. Bu çalışman ı n bir diğer amacı , AB 'nin benzer ko şullardaki ülkeleri üye olarak kabul ederken, Türkiye'nin üyeli ği için neden çekingen davrandığı nı n nedenlerini araştı rmakhr. Yunanistan, Avrupa ile olan tarihi, kültürel ve coğrafi yakı nlığını n avantajları nı kullanarak ve AB 'nin de deste ğini alarak AB üyesi olmu ştur. Eski bir komunist ülke olan Polonya da benzer nedenlerle şu an AB üyesidir. Fakat benzer koşullara sahip olan Türkiye'nin hâlâ üye olamaması gerçeği, AB'nin Türkiye'ye e şit davranmadığını desteklemektedir.
