Abstract:

The Turkish Pharmacists’ Society, the first professional assocation among pharmacists to be established in the Turkish Republic was founded in 1924. The Society decided to disallow pharmacists who were not owners of pharmacies themselves from membership. The Union of Turkish Pharmacologists (est. 1930) aimed to recruit all pharmacists in the same association, İsmet Muhsin Somer was chosen as the first president after election. This association involved three bodies: a general assembly, an administrative committee, and ethical committee. The organizing committee chose the name “Farmakolog” instead of the traditional “Eczacı” (apothecary) for its name. The Union launched its periodical “Farmakoloğ” in 1931. The Farmakoloğ was planned as monthly, but financial restraints led to delays. When the Union ended its publication in 1954 it had reached 24 volumes. The first issues were 30 pages, with additional pages for commercial advertisements. The editorial board of the journal included; Naşit Baylav, Hasan Derman, Mehmet Ali Kağıtçı, Hamdi Sanal. The Farmakoloğ carried scientific articles, pharmaceutical news and relative announcements. In 1939, the name of association was changed as The Turkish Pharmacists’ Society. The Society ceased to function in 1954, after which the periodical Farmakoloğ was not published. The Turkish Pharmacists’ Association was founded in 1956. The Farmakoloğ is a source of historical information for the period.
