Abstract:

In developed and developing countries, the inevitable increase in the numerical and technological capacity of the fishing fleets has a significant impact on the management and distribution of limited natural resources capacity and the ecological and socio-economic sustainability of fishing. It is important to identify these effects in order to make the right decisions in the fishing management. This study aims to evaluate the technical effectiveness, scale effectiveness and capacity use of fishermen who hunt the seafood on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. The study also compared economically efficient and inefficient ships. The data obtained by face-to-face consultation with the 452 boat owners are the main data of the study. The data were collected to determine the economic effectiveness of the vessels for one year. The economic effectiveness varied between 0.27 and 1, while the average value was 0.60. The conclusion has been that the owner’s age, level of training and height of the fisherman’s boat have a positive impact on economic efficiency. The technical performance points on boats were higher than the economic performance points. This shows that fishermen need the knowledge of choosing the optimal input combination at the level of data cost rather than technical knowledge.
