Abstract:

We aimed at evaluating complications associated with anesthesia in children with dental treatment under General Anesthesia (GA). After the approval of the Board of Ethics of the Selçuk University Faculty of Dentistry General Anesthesia and Sedation Clinic from 01.09.2020 to 01.09.2022, the registrations of children's patients operated between the dates of demographic data, ASA, comorbidities, anesthesia period, period of synthesis, cardiovascular/pulmonary complications and unpredictable hospitalization rate. Patients were divided into group 1 (0-3 years), group 2 (3-6 years) and group 3 (>6 years) according to age. The total number of patients was 398 people. All patients were between 2 and 15 years old. The number of patients in Group 1 is 7 and the comparison has not been statistically assessed. The average time of anesthesia for all patients was 96.9 minutes, the times in group 2 and group 3 were respectively 100.3 minutes and 88.7 minutes, and the difference between group 2 and 3 was statistically meaningful (p=0,003). The average body mass index (BMI) values for all patients in Group 2 and Group 3 were 16.1 and 18.6 respectively, and the difference between Group 2 and 3 was statistically significant (p<0.001). The number of ASA 1 and ASA 2 patients in Group 2 was 87.2% and 12.1% respectively. In Group 3, the number of ASA 1 and 2 patients was respectively 56.4 and 40.6%. The difference between group 2 and group 3 was statistically significant in terms of the ASA score (p<0,001). According to the FDA’s warning on the risks of anesthetic drugs, we did not find patients under the age of 3 who meet the risk criteria. None of our patients had no heart or pulmonary complications and had no unexpected hospitalization. Keywords: dental therapy, general anesthesia, child dental medicine

In group 2, the number of ASA 1 and 2 patients were 87.2% and 12.1%, respectively. In group 3, the number of ASA 1 and 2 patients were 56.4% and 40.6%, respectively. The difference between group 2 and 3 regarding ASA score was statistically significant (p<0.001). Conclusion: We have not found any patients under 3 years of age who were at risk according to the FDA warning regarding the risks of anesthetic drugs. No cardiac or pulmonary complications were observed in any of our patients and there were no unexpected hospitalizations. Key Words: dental treatment, general anesthesia, pediatric dentistry
