A SWOT Analysis of Istanbul University Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Department

Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of study was to made SWOT analyze for maintain the current well-being of Istanbul University (IU) Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Division and even move forward and was to evaluate how the increased number of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation schools affected on our institute in the eye of academicians and students. Methods: 80 volunteer undergraduates and 10 academicians were included. Strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of division were evaluated by open-ended questions. Content analysis was used to analyze the responses derived from open-ended questions. Results: 90% of the academicians saw “Having master's and doctoral programs” as strongest feature while 68,7% of undergraduates thought “Having rich academic squad consist of physiotherapists who were experts in their field”. Weaknesses were; 80% of the academicians said “The struggle of giving education in the campus that is separated from Medical School” while %56,2 of the undergraduates thought “Classrooms, amphitheaters and building conditions do not meet the demand. Opportunities were; 90% of the academicians thought “Having the opportunity to be educated with different disciplines” while 38,7% of the undergraduates thought “IU is well-established university in the field of education and a brand for business”. Potential threats were; 90% of the academicians said “Lack of professional rights” while 51,2% of the undergraduates thought “Due to increasing quota in schools, students who came to the program have the lowest exam score and they graduate as an unqualified physical therapists”. Conclusion: Prominence features should be ensured by retaining the outstanding opportunities and evaluating strengths. Considering the weaknesses and threats correct strategies should be determined so IU Division of Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation becomes preferable institution in every aspect.
