Fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) is a condition that is characterized by chronic widespread pain and multiple other symptoms such as fatigue, sleep disturbances and cognitive dysfunction . FMS may coexist and/or overlap with other conditions which may involve central sensitivity like chronic fatigue syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, irritable bladder syndrome or interstitial cystitis. Although the pathophysiology of FMS is still unclear, it is believed to be the result of central systems affecting afferent processing as well as impaired endogenous pain-inhibitory systems. Abnormalities at the central nociceptive processing may contribute to fibromiyalgia resulting in heightened responses to various stimuli. FMS is a clinical diagnosis. There has been a recent shift away from the requirement of pain at atleast 11 out of 18 tender points and instead focusing on the presence of chronic widespread pain as well as symptoms of fatigue, unrefreshed sleep and other somatic complaints. Treatment to improve symptoms as well as funtion of patients requires multidisciplinary combined treatment approaches including patient education, aerobic exercise, neuraltherapy, local anesthetic injection, cognitive behavioral therapy and pharmacological (antiepileptics, antidepressants) therapies
