Abstract:

The aim of this study is to explore the relationship between the leadership characteristics of nurses working in children’s clinics and family-centered care. Method: The research has been carried out as a identification in the children’s clinics of universities and public hospitals located in the Çukurova region (Mersin, Adana, Hatay, Osmaniye) between October 2016/January 2017. The universe of the study was composed of 631 nurses working in the clinics where the study was carried out. The sampling of the study was made by 528 nurses who participated in the study with unlikely voluntary sampling and reached 83.7% of the universe. The research data was collected using the "Demographic Information Form", the "Leadership Guidelines Scale" (LYÖ) and the "Family-centered Care Survey" (AMBA). Results: 89% of 528 nurses participated in the survey. 8 are women, 10.2% are men and the average age is 30.9±6.5. As the level of education increases, leadership directions are determined to increase the scale score. The AMBA score of high school graduate nurses was higher than the other nurses. A positive and statistically meaningful relationship between the total score of LYÖ and the AMBA score has been established. The result: the demonstration of leadership behaviors in nursing ensures that the rate of family-centered care practice increases and that the child is given a better quality care. In order to increase nurses’ leadership levels, it may be recommended to include leadership topics in nursing training programmes, to provide services in the institutions related to the subject; to adopt family-centered care as institutional policy and to make arrangements for it.
