Abstract This paper investigates beliefs, customs, traditions, religious and magical applications about birth from a folk medicinal point of view in Mersin and its counties. The study first classifies information gathered from oral and written sources about birth under three headings “pre-natal, labor and postpartum." After then, the paper explains folk-medicine applications for the baby and mother in these stages, their characteristics and functions. In addition, the paper informs the places and regions in which these beliefs and practices found, and describes people’s approach to folk medicinal practices about birth depending on the changes in modern socio-cultural life.
