Abstract:

In many fields of research, such as art, science, philosophy, the void is one of the important fact that must be examined from the historical environment in architecture discipline. The voids in the historical environment are of great importance as open spaces that add meaning to the urban whole with the features they shelter in. The cities are physically composed of solids and voids. In general, “void” refers to the open space and “solid” refers to the structured environment. Historical areas where solids and voids relationships can be read are important for document quality, making residential areas meaningful from the past to the present. Additionally, voids create for the formation of pattern and silhouettes that identify historic settlements. Through this perspective the voids in historic settlements and the solid-void typologies they set up with their immediate surroundings are important identity elements. In the scope of this study, Konuralp urban site, which is a layered historical settlement within the borders of Duzce city center, was selected as the study area. This study focused on examining the historic surrounding void relationships, using a typomorphological approach that combines the methods of examining both typology and morphology. Analyzes have been performed to examine the solid-void, void-void relationships in the selected area. This study is important in terms of documenting the existing void relations of a historical environment and revealing the inventory studies. A mixed method research including fractal analysis, topological analysis, spatial analysis and space syntax methods was conducted in Konuralp urban site. The voids were examined with a holistic reading at the neighborhood scale, and then detailed analyzes were made at the building scale. As a result of these analyzes, typological determinations were made on the voids in the study area as a historical environment. As a result of the determinations, the potentials of the voids in the area were revealed and usage recommendations were made in order to ensure the sustainability of the historical environment.
