Abstract:

The aim of this research is to examine the effects of experiments made with simple tools on attitude toward science, academic achievement and permanence of learning. In the study, quasi-experimental design with pretest-posttest control group was used from experimental designs. The study group consists of a total of 66 students in two fourth grade branches in a state primary school located in Kastamonu province center in the fall semester of 2017-2018 academic year. Experimental and control groups were randomly assigned. Of the students in the study group, 32 were in the experimental group and 34 were in the control group. The experimental application period covers a period of 8 weeks. Throughout the application process, the lessons in the experimental group were processed with experimental activities made with simple tools. In the control group, the courses were conducted in accordance with the relevant curriculum. Attitude scale and achievement test used in the research. In the analysis of the data, t-test was applied for independent groups. When the findings of the research are examined, it has been found that the hands-on science experiments applied in the experimental group provide the positive attitudes towards Science course both the academic success of the Science course. Nevertheless, the experimental activities carried out with the hands-on science experiments applied in the experimental group achieved the result that it made the learning more permanent. Based on these results, it is suggested that the lessons should be done by using experimental activities with hands on science experiments in science lessons.
