Abstract:

Many individual and environmental variables have an effect on university students’ behaviors of getting professional psychological help. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the professional psychological help seeking behaviors of university students studying in different facultiesbased on their gender, faculty, classroom level, accommodation and perceived level of income. The study group consisted of 786 university students who participated in the study voluntarily, and 441 of whom were female, 320 of whom were male and 25 of whom did not state their gender. Their ages ranged from 17 to 42, with a mean of 20.55 (sd: 2.01). The data were collected with Demographic Information Form developed by the researchers and Attitudes Toward Seeking Psychological Professional Help Scale-Short Form. The results demonstrated that university students’ behaviors of getting professional psychological help were significantly different in terms of gender, faculty and accommodation variables; however, significant differences were not found based on the perceived level of income. Those results were discussed regarding therelated literature. It is thought that the results of the study are significant in determining some individual and environmental variables that affect university students’ behaviors of getting professional psychological help, and suggest some guiding information to particularly psychological counseling centers for their further studies and practices.
