Abstract:

Language, which is a system of signs and rules, allows the speaker/writer to describe an entity, event, feeling, or situation in fine detail. It also provides instruments that express more with less, such as idioms, proverbs, and metaphorical expressions. While these are the result of the law of least effort, they are also the product of the effort to be effective in expression. For this reason, authors include idioms and metaphorical sayings in their works. Nazan Bekiroğlu, who stands out in modern Turkish literature by successfully handling traditions, historical events, and events bearing traces of her life in her novels, is one of these writers. Especially his novels Nar Ağacı and Mücellâ attract attention in this respect. In the study, idioms and metaphorical expressions in these novels were identified. Idioms were scanned from TDK Turkish Dictionary and Ahmet Turan Sinan’s Idiom Existence of Turkish. It has been observed that dictionaries do not contain current forms of idioms and there is variation in idioms. In this regard, it has been determined that Bekiroğlu contributes to the Turkish lexicon through the production and reproduction facilitated by idioms and metaphorical expressions.
