Anahtar Kelime: Hipertansiyon; masaj; tamamlayıcı tedaviler ABSTRACT Aim: THypertension affects about one billion people worldwide in both developed and developing countries and one of the most important causes of death from cardiovascular diseases. It is known that the decrease in blood pressure contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular complications. Therefore, prevention and effective treatment of essential hypertension is of great importance. It is thought that pharmacological treatment does not have sufficient effect on controlling blood pressure and improving the quality of life of individuals with hypertension. Because of the increasing number of patients and the negative effects of antihypertensive drugs used, individuals seek different treatment methods. Nowadays, among the complementary and integrative therapies, which are frequently preferred with medical treatment, for the reason of healing and low side effects such as yoga, acupuncture and massage are used by individuals with chronic diseases. Massage is one of the common methods between complementary and integrative therapies. In the studies performed, approximately half of the patients applying complementary and integrative treatment methods prefer massage. Massage is used to relieve the symptoms of many types of cancer such as breast cancer, hypertension, rehabilitation after cardiac surgery, headache, dementia, stress, fibromyalgia, osteoarthritis, fatigue and to improve the quality of life. It is supported by meta-analysis studies that massage balances blood flow in the body on blood pressure and provides relief as a result of relaxation response. In this article, considering the positive effects of massage, it is suggested that it can be applied as a nonpharmacological method in the management of hypertension. Keywords: Hypertension; massage; complementary therapies

Abstract:

Hypertension affects approximately a billion people in both developed and developing countries around the world and is one of the main causes of cardiovascular diseases. It is known that the decrease in blood pressure contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular complications. Therefore, the prevention and effective treatment of essential hypertension is of great importance. It is believed that pharmacological therapy cannot have sufficient effect on controlling blood pressure and improving the quality of life of individuals with hypertension, and individuals are looking for different treatments due to the increased number of patients from day to day and the negative effects of the antihypertensive drugs used. Today, healing and low-level side effects methods such as yoga, acupuncture and massage, which are often among the preferred complementary and integrated (integrative) treatments along with medical treatment, are used by individuals with chronic disease. One of the methods that is common among complementary and integrated (integrative) treatments is massage. In the study, about half of patients applying for complementary and integrated (integrative) treatments prefer massage. Massage is used to alleviate the symptoms of many types of cancer, such as hypertension, post-surgical rehabilitation, headache, dementia, stress, fibromyalgia, osteoartritis, fatigue and breast cancer, and improve the quality of life. The massage is supported by meta-analysis studies that balanced the blood flow into the body on blood pressure and provide relief as a result of the relaxation response. In this article, it is recommended that, taking into account the positive effects of massage, it can be applied as a non-pharmacological method in the management of hypertension.
