Nurses are dealing with maintaining the patient care, health prornotion andpreuenting the illnesses. Prouiding the care is a basic function of nursing. Inliterature, it has been stated that nurses and patients perceive the care andpriorities of care different. For this reason, for prouiding the patient centred carewhich enhancing, widening and based from knowledge, patients' opinions,priorities and needs of care are tvell determined. In this study, the determination ofpriorities of nursing care in point of cardiac surgery patients and nurses was aimed.The sample of this descriptitıe study was 20 cardiac surgery nurses inuoluingnursing care, between the 300, May 2000 and 7", June 2001 in Ege and Dokuz EylulUniversity Research and Application Hospitals and 18-70 aged, at least one weekhospitalised 100 patients who had undergone surgery in the date mentioned above.First of al , oral approval was taken from patients and nurses by explaining thepurpose of the study. Data of research were obtained with questionnaire formthat was structured according to the literature by the researchers. Questionnaireform consists of 11 questions for patients, 5 questions for nurses ta collectsociodemographic data, and 15 items to eualuate the priorities of nursing care.During the application of the research, patients and nurses were asked for the rankedthe most important 5 items, according to degree of priorities from 1 to 5. Numberingand percentages was used for determining the most important 5 items of nursingcare. As results; "nurses should be kind and understanding" was found the mostimportant item according to 31% of patients whereas "competencies of nurses duringthe nursing care" according to 65% of nurses. View of these findings, priorities ofnursing care was different for patients and nurses and patients' priorities should bekept in mind for prouiding nursing care
