Abstract:

Idioms are succinct words that make a situation statement or summary in a concise and effective manner. It is essential to know well the idioms, which are undoubtedly one of the most important riches of the language, in order to have a command of a language. Idioms, in which the reflection of the culture is seen most intensely, are fed from the living space of the language. It is natural for languages that feed on similar living space to have similar idioms. The translation of idioms containing figurative expressions requires mastery of the source and target language. Translations between languages act as a bridge that brings these two languages and cultures closer together. Literary works are rich sources in terms of idioms they contain. In this study, idioms selected from the Turkish translation of Taissier Khalaf's novel "Darwin's Sparrows" were examined in terms of structure and meaning. The aim and method of the study is the formal and semantic analysis of 20 idioms identified in the Turkish translation of the novel in the context of Mona Baker's idiom translation strategies by adopting a critical approach by the translator of the novel. According to the translation strategies of the analyzed idioms, they were distributed as "translation with similar meaning and similar form" strategy, "translation with similar meaning but dissimilar form" strategy, then "translation by paraphrase" strategy and finally "translation by omission" strategy.
