Abstract The study aimed to know the conceptions of volunteers who provide religious-spiritual support in a General Hospital about the relationship between religiosity/spirituality (R/S) and health-disease processes. Fifteen volunteers were interviewed, most of them Christian, with a mean age of 57.06 years and 8.06 years of volunteering. These participants understand that the R/S dimension has direct relationships with positive health outcomes. These outcomes do not necessarily correspond to the cure, but the possibility of reception in a moment of strong emotional mobilization, as well as the construction of intelligibility about death, dying and mourning. Despite the service portrayed being sustained in religious diversity, actions were observed that are produced by and aimed at, mostly, adherents of Christian religions. It is recommended that non-hegemonic religions can also be effectively represented, allowing the reception of patients who profess different creeds and religious-spiritual conceptions.
