Abstract:

Purpose: Our study was aimed at examining the application of antibiotic spacer (AS) and cultural results in patients diagnosed with infection with surgery. Tools and Methods: Patients who were placed AS due to infection between January 2017 and January 2019 were taken to study. Patients' sociodemographic characteristics, laboratory results and cultural results taken from the wound site were recorded. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to cultural results. Results: 22 of the 40 patients surveyed (55%) (GroupA) did not confirm reproduction in the wound site culture, while 18 (45) (GroupB) were reproductive. The average age of patients was GroupA 64.78 ±19.95, GroupB 62.05 ±17.55. Patients were diagnosed in 4 groups, including chronic osteomyelitis, knee prothesis, neck prothesis and trauma. Compared to the groups that have been reproduced and not produced in the cultural results, there was no significant difference between the groups in gender, diagnosis, sedimentation, C-reactive protein and WBC values (p ≥0,05). In 9 patients with culture reproduction, 9 gram positive bacteria, 5 gram negative bacteria, 3 mixed infection, and 1 patient with fungal reproduction were detected. Result: More than half of the patient cultures applied to AS have not been reproduced in the culture. It was observed that the most frequently preferred antibiotics for gram-positive factors were observed. It is an effective method in the fight against ortopedic infections. However, unselected antibiotic therapy can reduce the effectiveness of the drug.
