Abstract:

Charles Mismer, who first came into contact with the Islamic world as a soldier during the Crimean War of 1853-1856, improved his relations with the Ottoman Empire and the Eastern world in the following years. After being appointed as the Editor-in-Chief of the newspaper La Turquia, he came to Istanbul in 1867 and also became the French language secretary of Ali Pasha. He travels to Crete, Egypt and Algeria for various purposes. The relations he established with famous statesmen of the period such as Fuad, Ali, Hüseyin Avni and the Egyptian Khedive İsmail pashas carried him to a much higher level than his journalism. He makes a book of his memories and thoughts about Islam and Muslims. He is known as a French sympathizer of Ottoman and Islam in his country France and in the East. However, there is no biographical study about him other than the work written by François Georgeon in French. This article is an attempt to present the biography of Charles Mismer with the above justification, and aims to fill the gap in the literature.
