Abstract:

As an essential factor in human beings' linguistic and intellectual development, walking is a movement of displacement both physically and intellectually. It is possible to observe that the academic journey of many philosophers in the history of philosophy also depends on a walking habit. Walking has an essential place in obtaining scientific knowledge in the lives of many scientists who shape modern science. Therefore, it can be claimed that walking in the history of both philosophy and science has an essential function in developing ideas. Experimental studies on the effect of walking on thinking and mental development in modern science also support this claim. Based on these studies, although a direct cause and effect relationship cannot be established between walking and thinking, it can be said that there are structural similarities. To think is to travel with concepts. However, one needs experiences and journeys that will enable him to acquire concepts that will take him on a journey. Where (in nature, in the city) and how (by walking or using various means of transportation) people go on this journey have a decisive role in shaping the relationship they will establish with their environment. Although the places where people live and the means of transportation have changed over time, walking has continued to be a part of human life as the purest human action. In this context, the effect of walking on thinking will be tried to be revealed through the intellectual journeys of philosophers and scientists.
