Introduction: Aging brings challenges to the maintenance of quality of life, along with associated chronic diseases present greater health risks, systemic arterial hypertension is characterized by a constant high pressure in the arteries, changing the lifestyle is a proposal of treatment as a form of non-drug intervention, through the regular practice of physical activity. Objective: The present study investigated the hypotensive effects of strength training and combined training in hypertensive elderly. It is about a randomized clinical trial realized in the physical education department from the federal university of Pernambuco (UFPE). Materials and Methods: The anthropometric measures were weight and height for calc of body mass index, skin folds for calc of fat percentage, balance test and, for measure strength was realized sit and up test. Participated 20 elderly with hypertension, all higher or equal to 60 years, recruited for SerAtivo project from UFPE. Results: Were presented significant results in relation to time on arterial systolic pressure (p=0,011), diastolic (p=0,000) also in waist circumference (p=0,005) and, waist and hip relation (p=0,040), with large effect size in diastolic pressure and medium effect size in hip circumference, waist and hip relation and, also in systolic pressure. Conclusion: Therefore, it is evident the hypotensive effect of strength training, furthermore of reductions on waist, waist and hip relation and, reductions in health risk.
