Abstract:

Author:
Abstract:

This study examined three secondary education sociology school books approved by the Board of Education, Ministry of National Education to be taught in the 2019-2020 academic year, in terms of discourses related to elderly, old age, and ageing. The study in which the data was collected via documentation which is among qualitative research methods, primarily examined the frequency of concepts to be included in school books in terms of their frequency and percentage and then revealed the correlation between the acquisitions of the sociology curriculum, which has been taught since 2009, and old age. Representations of ageing and old age phenomenon in school books were analyzed within the frame of the construction of old age, and old age discourses were interpreted within the scope of old age theories. It was determined that the school book including the concepts of elderly, old age, and ageing the most was a state school book written by Gulsen Ozer. In all school books, the old age discourses were associated with the withdrawal (resolution) theory, and in addition to this theory, it was thought that Ada Printing school book written by Elif Ekici discursively represents old age with the “continuity” theory and Tuna Printing school book written by Murat Yurtseven represents old age with the “activity” theory. It was concluded that Tuna Printing school book is associated with the activity theory because it stresses the necessity of encouraging the elderly to maintain their activities, while Ada Printing school book is associated with the continuity theory because it stresses that the condition of the elderly in old age is in continuity with their biographic identity in adulthood.
