Değerler, bireyi belirli amaçlar doğrultusunda harekete geçiren soyut düşünce ve davranış temsilleridir. Her birey ve toplumun kendi değer öncelikleri vardır (Temel Değerler Kuramı; Schwartz, 2006). Ebeveynler değerleri çocuklarına aktararak toplumsal değişimi ya da sürekliliği sağlar. Değerlerin kuşaklar arası aktarımının belirli koşullara bağlı biçimde gerçekleştiği hipotezini sınamak üzerine yürütülen bu nitel çalışma, gelişmiş bir ülkede çoklu dezavantaj koşullarında büyüyen bir çocuğun yaşamını ayrıntılı biçimde yansıtan belirgin bir örnek olması özelliği ile seçilen Toni Morrison’un “En Mavi Göz” romanını ele almaktadır. Bu tematik incelemenin kuramsal ve kavramsal temelleri ise; Schwartz’ın on temel değeri, Kağıtçıbaşı’nın çocuğa verilen değeri ele aldığı çalışmaları ve kuşaklar arası aktarımının çocuğun sosyo-kültürel ekolojisini oluşturan ekonomik ve demografik koşullar ile bağlantılı biçimde açıklandığı “seçici süreğenlik” hipotezine dayanmaktadır. Bulgular, beklenen biçimde, kültürel azınlık gruptan bir ailenin düşük sosyoekonomik konum ve olumsuz sosyo-demografik özelliklerine bağlı olarak, muhafazacılık değerlerini öncelikli olarak benimseyip aktardıkları görülmüştür. Bulgular, ailelerin kültürel arka planı ve yaşam tarzının değer aktarıma etkilerini ele alan Kağıtçıbaşı’nın Aile Değişim Modeli temelinde tartışılacaktır.
Values are the representations of abstract thought and behavior that move the individual towards specific goals. Every individual and society has its own values (The Theory of Fundamental Values, Schwartz, 2006). Parents provide social change or continuity by transmitting values to their children. This qualification study, testing the hypothesis that the transition of values occurs according to specific circumstances, deals with Toni Morrison's "The Blue Eye" novel, which is chosen to be a clear example of a child who grows in multiple disadvantages in a developed country, with the character of being a clear example that reflects in detail the life of a child. The theoretical and conceptual foundations of this thematic study are based on the “selective continuity” hypothesis of Schwartz’s ten fundamental values, the paperworkers’ work on the value given to the child and the intergenerational transmission in connection with the economic and demographic conditions that make up the child’s socio-cultural ecology. The findings showed that, as expected, conservative values were primarily accepted and transmitted due to the low socio-economic position and negative socio-demographic characteristics of a family from a cultural minority group. The findings will be discussed on the basis of the Paperman's Family Change Model, which discusses the cultural background of families and the effects of their lifestyle on the value transfer.
Values are the abstract representations of thoughts and behaviors that mobilize the person for certain purposes. Each individual and society has its own value priorities (Value Theory; Schwartz, 2006). Parents transfer their values to their children and ensure the variability or continuity of their society. This qualitative study examines the intergenerational transmission of Schwartz's ten fundamental values through Toni Morrison's “The Bluest Eye” novel, which is an outstanding example of a detailed story of a child growing in multi disadvantage circumstances in a developed country. The theoretical and conceptual bases of thematic analysis are; the intergenerational transmission of Schwartz's ten basic values, the values given to the child based on Kağıtçıbaşı’s studies and the "selective continuity" hypothesis in which the intergenerational transfer is explained in connection with the economic and demographic conditions that form the socio-cultural ecology of the child. Results showed that, as expected, parents of minority groups primarily adopted and transferred the values of conservation due to their socioeconomic status and sociodemographic characteristics. These findings will be discussed on the basis of the Family Change Model of Kağıtçıbaşı which deals with the cultural background of families and the effects of lifestyle on value transmission.
