Abstract:

Due to the increasing environmental problems, terms used in environmental issues in our daily life have also increased. Global warming and climate change caused by environmental pollution has become the most important topic of our day. Creating social awareness on environmental issues and spreading correct information has gained importance. This study, carried out with questionnaire (questioning) technique, was planned to reveal the awareness of people about environmental issues through some selected terms. An electronic questionnaire was prepared to measure the level of knowledge of these terms and to determine from which sources the information about the term was obtained. For 50 Turkish terms commonly used in environmental sciences in a broad sense; the level of awareness and information sources were asked in options. Turkey via the Internet through online application method is provided for the participation of 500 people from various provinces throughout the country. The results were evaluated statistically, taking into account the responses of all participants. According to the option “I have enough information to explain” the terms with the highest level of awareness in the society, photosynthesis, erosion and global warming while the terms with the least level of awareness were eutrophication, anthropogenic and passive building according to the option “I have never encountered”. In addition, the most used information source by the participants was determined as scientific articles/books and the least used newspaper/magazine source. This study will contribute to the future generations to gain environmental awareness, to increase the awareness of environmental terms, and to the correct use of informative resources.
