Dar gelirli bireylere yardım/bağış yerine bankalar, sivil toplum kuruluşları, kredi kooperatifleri ve diğer resmi mali sistem unsurları aracılığıyla onları üretime sevk edecek düşük miktarda kredilerin kullandırılması, tasarruf ve diğer temel finansal hizmetlerin sağlanması olarak tanımlanabilen mikro finansman, yoksullukla mücadelede etkili olduğu savunulan popüler yaklaşımlardandır. Türkiye’de fert başına gelir bağlamında uzun süredir ilk sıralarda olan Kocaeli’de, demografik unsurlar kentsel yoksulluğu çözüm bekleyen sorunlar arasına yerleştirmektedir. Bu çalışma, kentsel yoksulluğun mikro kredi uygulamalarıyla azaltılabileceği argümanını Kocaeli örneğinde incelemeyi ve mikro kredilerin katkısını saptamayı amaçlamaktadır
