Bu araştırmanın amacı Hacettepe Üniversitesi İngilizce hazırlık sınıfında İngilizce eğitimi alan öğrencilerin “İngilizce”ye ve “İngilizce öğrenme”ye yönelik metaforik algılarını belirlemektir. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2017-2018 öğretim yılında Hacettepe Üniversitesi Yabancı Diller Yüksekokulu’nda öğrenim görmekte olan 60’ı kız, 47’si erkek olmak üzere toplam 107 öğrenci oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın verileri “İngilizce/İngilizce öğrenmek …..gibidir. Çünkü ….” biçiminde ifade edilmiş bir açık uçlu anket yoluyla toplanmıştır. İçerik analizi kullanılarak yapılan incelemeler sonucunda katılımcılar “İngilizce”ye ilişkin 96, “İngilizce öğrenme”ye ilişkin 102 adet geçerli metafor üretmişlerdir. Ayrıca, öğrenciler “İngilizce” için sekiz farklı kavramsal kategori oluştururken, “İngilizce öğrenme”ye ilişkin on farklı kavramsal kategori oluşturmuşlardır. Bu araştırmanın sonuçlarına göre, hazırlık sınıfı öğrencilerinin İngilizce’ye ve İngilizce öğrenmeye yönelik geliştirdikleri metaforik algıları büyük ölçüde olumludur ve bu öğrenciler İngilizce öğrenmenin kaçınılmaz bir gerçek olduğununun da farkındadırlar. Öğrencilerin metaforik algılarının olumlu olması hem dili zenginleştirmekte hem de öğrenmeyi kolaylaştırmaktadır.
The purpose of this research is to determine the metaphoric perceptions of students who learn English in the English Preparatory Class at the University of Hacettepe to "English" and "English Learning". The study group comprises a total of 107 students, including 60 girls and 47 men, who are studying at the University of Hacettepe High School of Foreign Languages in the 2017-2018 academic year. The data of the study is "Learn English/English. Because...” It has been gathered through an open end survey. According to the results of the content analysis, participants produced 96 metaphors on "English" and 102 on "English Learning". In addition, students form eight different conceptual categories for "English", while they form ten different conceptual categories for "English learning". According to the results of this study, the metaphoric perceptions that preparation class students develop to learn English and English are largely positive, and these students are also aware that learning English is an inevitable fact. Being positive in the student’s metaphoric perceptions both enrichs the language and makes it easier to learn.
The aim of this study is to determine the metaphorical perceptions of English Preparatory Program (EPP) students towards “English” and “Learning English”. In the study group, there are 107 university students (60 female and 47 male) attending EPP in 2017-2018 academic year at Hacettepe University School of Foreign Languages. The data were collected through an open-ended questionnaire, which is expressed as "English/ learning English is like … because…”. According to the findings, participants produced 102 valid metaphors for “English” and 96 for “learning English”. Metaphors were integrated into 8 conceptual categories for “English” and 10 conceptual categories for “learning English”. According to the results, metaphorical perceptions of EPP students towards English are generally positive and students are aware that learning English is an inevitable necessity. The positive metaphorical perceptions of students both enrich the language and facilitate learning.
