Abstract Among the contemporary writers, José María Merino is one of the writers most interested in the fundamental elements of fiction, particularly of those of the short story narrative. His writings develop very suggestive and consistent thesis. The first part of this analysis deals with the theoretical scope displayed in his works of fiction and the readings and oral stories he was exposed to when he was young and were most influential in his writings. This article focuses mainly on the world of the uncunny in Merino's stories. The uncunny understood as strange, weird, as the interference of the unknown in ordinary reality: double personalities, haunted places, ghosts, masks and, more relevantly, the interference of sleep-vigil states, which is the writer's main concern.
