Abstract:

Purpose: In this study, it was aimed to evaluate the efficiency of intensive care units, to determine the intensive care units that inefficient intensive care units can take as a reference to be effective, and to determine the differences between intensive care units in terms of efficiency levels. Methodology: In the study, annual statistical data of 2018 of 12 intensive care units in Gazi University Health Research and Application Center were used. The efficiency of intensive care units was evaluated by Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method. BCC (Banker, Charnes and Cooper), CCR (Charnes, Cooper and Rhodes and Super efficiency models have been used to assess the efficiency of intensive care. Findings: Anesthesia and Reanimation, Child, Internal Medicine and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit have not been found efficient in both CCR and BCC DEA results. Although according to the CCR DEA result, the Chest Surgery Intensive Care Unit was the super-efficient unit among the efficient intensive care units, Intensive Care Unit for Cardiovascular Surgery comes out to be the super-efficient unit according to the BCC DEA. Also, the analysis reported variations between the intensive care units' efficiency levels. Originality: It is important to use resources efficiently by evaluating the effectiveness of intensive care unit, which have a significant share in both the recent COVID-19 pandemic and health expenditures.
