Bu çalışmada, STEM eğitim yaklaşımına uygun olarak hazırlanan bir etkinliğin ayrıntılı olarak tanıtılması ve gerçekleştirilen etkinlik ile ilgili lise öğrencilerinin görüşlerinin incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Çalışmaya 2019-2020 eğitim öğretim yılının güz döneminde Batı Karadeniz’de bulunan bir devlet fen lisesinin 9. sınıfında öğrenim gören 28 öğrenci katılmıştır. STEM etkinliği, matematik dersinde 3 ders saati boyunca araştırmacılar tarafından gerçekleştirilmiştir. Etkinlikte öğrencilerden oyuncak bebek ve ambalaj lastikleri kullanılarak bir bungee atlayışı gerçekleştirmeleri beklenmektedir. Bunun için atlayışın yapılacağı mesafe öğrencilere önceden verilerek, öğrencilerden bu atlayışı güvenli bir şekilde gerçekleştirebilmek için kullanacakları lastik sayısını tahmin etmeleri istenmiştir. Gerçekleştirilen etkinlikte fen, teknoloji, mühendislik ve matematik disiplinlerinin entegrasyonu sağlanmaya çalışılmıştır. Etkinlik fizik dersi kapsamında enerji, enerjinin korunumu ve enerji dönüşümleri konusunu, matematik dersi kapsamında ise doğrusal denklemler, grafik çizme ve yorumlama konularını içermektedir. Etkinlik sonunda öğrencilerin etkinlik ile ilgili görüşlerini almak için etkinlik görüş formu kullanılmıştır. Çalışmada veriler, kuramsal çerçevede belirtilen STEM ile ilgili oluşturulmuş temalar yardımı ile betimsel analiz yöntemi kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Çalışma sonuçları, öğrencilerin etkinlik sayesinde STEM’i öğrendiklerini, etkinliği eğlenceli ve öğretici bulduklarını, etkinliğin grup çalışmasına ve üst düzey düşünme becerilerine katkı sağladığını göstermektedir. Öğrenciler, etkinliğin yalnızca uygulanışı konusunda olumsuz görüş bildirmişlerdir. Bu etkinliğin, öğrencilerin hem STEM alanlarına yönelik farkındalıklarını arttıracağı hem de bu alanlarda kariyer bilinci geliştirmelerine katkıda bulunacağı düşünülmektedir.
In this study, the aim is to present in detail an event prepared in accordance with the STEM educational approach and to study the views of high school students regarding the event carried out. The study was attended by 28 students who studied in the 9th grade of a state science high school located in the West Black Sea during the 2019-2020 academic year. The STEM event was carried out by researchers for 3 hours of course in mathematics course. At the event, students are expected to make a bungee jump using toy babies and packaging tyres. For this purpose, the distance to which the jump will be done is given in advance, and the students are asked to predict the number of tyres they will use to make this jump safe. The event has been aimed at ensuring the integration of the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. The event includes the subject of energy, energy conservation and energy transformation in the course of physics, and the subject of linear equations, graphic drawing and interpretation in the course of mathematics. At the end of the event, the activity opinion form was used to obtain the students’ opinions about the event. In the study, the data was analyzed using the visual analysis method with the help of the themes created related to the STEM specified in theoretical framework. The study results show that students learn STEM through the event, find the event fun and instructive, and that the event contributes to group work and high-level thinking skills. Students have expressed negative opinions only about the implementation of the event. It is believed that this event will boost students’ awareness of both the STEM fields and will contribute to their career awareness in these fields.
This study aims to introduce an activity prepared in accordance with the STEM education approach in detail and examine the opinions of high school students about this activity. In the fall semester of the 2019-2020 academic year, 28 students studying in the 9th grade of a state science high school in the Black Sea Region participated in this study. The researchers carried out the STEM activity during 3 lesson hours in the mathematics lesson. Students are expected to perform a bungee jump using a doll and rubber bands in the activity. For this, the distance to which the jump will be made was given to the students in advance, and they were asked to estimate the number of rubber bands they would use to perform this jump safely. In this way, it aimed to integrate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. This activity includes energy, conservation of energy, and energy transformations within the scope of a physics course, and linear equations, graph drawing, and interpretation within the scope of mathematics course. At the end of the activity, the feedback form was used to get the students' opinions about the activity. In the study, the data were analyzed using the descriptive analysis method with the help of the themes related to STEM specified in the theoretical framework. The study results show that the students learned STEM with this activity, as well as they found the activity fun and instructive. It is also found that this activity contributed to students' group work and high-level thinking skills. The students expressed a negative opinion only about the implementation of the activity. With this activity, it is believed that this event will increase students' awareness of STEM fields and contribute to their career awareness in these fields.
