Abstract:

The study was aimed at investigating the relationship between serum magnesium (Mg) levels and serum glucose regulation in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Materials and Methods: Study of 152 T2DM patients and 57 non-DM persons who apply to the Internal Disease Clinics of the University of Kafkas Medical School were taken. The patient group was grouped as <6,5% and ≥6,5% according to HbA1 c, and <1,6 and ≥1,6 (mg/dl) according to Mg. Results: A significant negative correlation between Mg levels and HbA1 c levels has been found (r=-0,391, r2=0,153, p<0,001). Similarly; Mg, HbA1 c, HDL, triglyceride, total cholesterol, hunger insulin, hunger glucose and HOMA-IR levels were statically significantly different in T2DM patients according to the control group (p<0,05). Furthermore, there was no significant difference between the levels of vitamin D, HDL, LDL, triglycerides, total cholesterol, calcium, phosphorus, hunger insulin between the HbA1 c <6,5% and HbA1 c ≥6,5% groups of patients (p>0,05). When comparing Mg (<0,001), HOMA-IR (0,039) and hunger glucose levels (<0,001) between these groups, the difference is statistically meaningful. The result: Serum Mg levels in T2DM patients are lower than the healthy control group. In addition, lower levels of Mg have been detected in patients with dysfunctional glucose regulation in T2DM. These findings reveal the importance of monitoring Mg levels and working on treatment strategies in diabetic patients to break the intestinal cycle between T2DM and Mg deficiency.
