Abstract:

Tokat district consisted of Nefs-i Tokat, Kazabad, and Fenk councils in the middle of the 15th Century, There were 95 villages, one residential area, and three residential hamlets in the district. Three villages were abandoned, which were either not recorded in subsequent censuses or turned into hamlets. The total number of nefers in the district was 5814. Approximately 53% of them lived in Tokat city. Tokat district had a population with dominant Muslim element, where ¾ of the residents was Muslim. The number of Muslim residents in the centrum was lower (about 62%), the same was higher in rural areas of the district. The rate of immigrants across the district (4.5%) was not at a level that would affect religious, economic, and cultural life. The low rate of immigrants in the district was indicative of the fact that during the mid-15th Century the district had a stable/static population structure. The 99 settlements that made up the rural area of Tokat district reached to the present day with the same or changed names. The percentage thereof is approximately 48%. While the residential areas and hamlets in the district’s rural area turned into villages over time, certain villages also turned into districts, towns, or neighborhoods.
